The seller's price alone won't tell you which is which, but a shell that flexes when you press on it usually will.
What to look for in a good banjo
- rim and tone ring. Check whether the rim is solid wood (mahogany, maple) with a brass or bronze tone ring, not a thin stamped steel shell that rattles and can't sustain a note.
- head material. A real or quality synthetic mylar head keeps its tension for years, while the shrink-wrap plastic heads on knockoffs go slack and flat-sounding within months.
- tuning pegs. Geared tuners hold pitch and turn smoothly, while the cheap friction pegs common on knockoffs slip mid-song and strip out over time.
- price as a filter. Verified US sellers in this category run from about $10 to $799 depending on build, so anything priced below that floor with full hardware and a wood rim is cutting something you can't see in the listing photos.
