What to look for in a good key fob replacement

• Chip match, not just shape. The fob has to carry a transponder chip tuned to your car's exact frequency and rolling code, and a knockoff that merely looks right often needs a locksmith to force-program it, if it programs at all.
• Button switches. Quality fobs use metal-domed switches under each button, while cheap ones use a flat membrane pad that goes mushy or stops registering presses within a few months.
• Case fit and seals. Look at the seam where the case halves meet and the battery door: a loose or gapped fit lets moisture and dust in and is the first sign of a rushed mold.
• Programming and return support. A trustworthy seller tells you upfront whether the fob needs dealer programming or self-programs, and backs that claim with an actual return window, not a vague listing that goes silent once you've paid.
