What to look for in a good leather planner
- Check the leather type. Full grain or top grain leather has visible pores and small natural marks, while bonded leather or PU looks uniformly smooth and often smells like plastic instead of hide.
- Look at the edges. Quality covers have burnished or hand-painted edges that are smooth to the touch, while cheap ones have raw cut edges that fray or peel within months.
- Test the ring mechanism. Open and close the rings if you can, a solid mechanism snaps shut evenly with no gap, while a cheap one sticks, misaligns, or feels like thin stamped metal.
- Let price set expectations. Real leather planners from verifiable sellers run about $20 to $100, so anything priced well under that floor is almost certainly bonded leather or vinyl dressed up as the real thing.
