What to look for in a good matcha green tea
- Color says everything. Good matcha is a bright, almost electric jade green; anything dull olive, brownish, or yellow-tinged has oxidized or was never shade-grown to begin with.
- Grind and texture. Run a pinch between your fingers, real matcha feels like fine talc, while cheap stock feels grainy or clumps because it was stone-ground poorly or cut with regular green tea powder.
- Grade claims need backup. Ceremonial grade should come with a harvest or grade statement on the packaging, not just the word 'ceremonial' printed on a bag with no other detail.
- Packaging protects the powder. Matcha degrades in light and air, so look for an opaque, resealable tin or foil pouch rather than a clear plastic bag, which is a sign the seller didn't think about shelf life.
