A real muslin blanket is soft cotton gauze woven in multiple layers so it gets softer and thicker with every wash, not thinner. The cheap versions are single-layer gauze dressed up in stock photos, and they usually show up at the very bottom of that $15 to $70 range or under it.
What to look for in a good muslin blanket
- Layer count. Check the listing for layer count, four to six layers of cotton gauze is standard for a real muslin blanket, one or two layers means it will feel like cheesecloth after a wash.
- Fabric weight. Good muslin lists a gsm or weight in ounces, if the listing only says '100% cotton' with no weight given, assume it is thin and see-through.
- Hem construction. Flip to the edge photos, a proper hem is folded over and double-stitched flat, a cheap one has a single raw seam that starts fraying after two washes.
- Size after washing. Muslin shrinks, a well-made blanket lists its finished size to account for that, a knockoff lists the pre-shrink size and quietly hands you a smaller blanket.
