What to look for in a good pipe nipple
- Check the thread cut. Run a finger down the threads; NPT threads should taper evenly and feel sharp and consistent, not rounded off or gritty from a rushed die.
- Confirm the schedule. Schedule 40 is standard for most water and gas lines, but schedule 80 has a noticeably thicker wall and matters if the nipple is exposed or takes repeated stress.
- Look at the coating. Galvanized nipples should have a uniform gray coat with no bare steel patches or flaking at the ends, since that's where rust starts first.
- Price is a signal. Legitimate sellers in this category run from about $5 to $47 depending on size and material; anything priced well under that low end usually means thinner steel or shorted threads to hit a number.
